Effects of bioturbation by Hexagenia and mussels on P release from sediments

Hexagenia mayflies are increasing again in Oneida Lake, and as bioturbators may counteract the effects of mussels clearing the water. In 2019, a controlled experiment was conducted in the experimental room with both Hexagenia mayflies and quagga mussels in realistic densities compared to the lake bottom. At those densities, quagga mussel clearing the water is the dominant factor, and mussels will increase the P levels in the water column, likely from excretion. These effects needs to be accounted for in P budgets for the lake.
